HELLO! and happy 2012 to all of you readers.

Phew! it has been so extremly hectic around here that i barely have had time to sleep. I did have an amazing holiday break all my family and closest friends decided to come from all over to my new little apartment. So you can imagine... there was sleeping bags all over the floor at night which we took advantage of and made it into a big slumber party watching Christmas movies.
I had a great time with my family, my boyfriend and my best friend . Here's a few pictures of my very special holiday week.

Tis' the season...to be crafty.

The season to be jolly, to get presents, drink hot chocolate, spend time with your family. This year i have decided to make at least one handmade present for each one of my special persons in my life!
I decided to start practicing my embroidery that my grandma taught me forever ago but i just really never had the chance, so i gave it a shot and made a wall decor piece for my best friend when she came down to visit me and since i've been making little fun pieces for my apartment to decorate.
I got some ideas form some crafty blogs and today i have decided to share with you my take on the easy and fun idea for personalized Christmas presents.

I made one for my restroom wall since its kinda small it fits perfect right by the towels.
Here is a quick tutorial of how i embroidered a quick and easy piece of wall decor.

Materials :
-Canvas fabric 1/2 a yrd (cost aprox: $1.99)
-pins
-measuring tape
-needle
-one sheet of white paper
-wood embroidery frame size Medium (cost: $1.19) >>note: you can use any size you want to make it
-sharpie fine point
-embroidery yarn color of your choice

Once you have cut your fabric in a square 3 inches bigger than your wood frame, You print the image of your liking and then pin it to the fabric.
Make sure you are in a well lit area so you can trace easily. For the most part the fabric is very thin so you shouldn't have a problem.

You can print out the letters too if you dont feel comfortable free tracing them, i decided to draw them myself.
Then you start to embroider around the image of your drawing with your needle starting from under the fabric. I usually make sure the stitch is no bigger than a grain of rice. and you continue to stitch along the drawing line.

After you are done embroidering the image you can just cut the fabric from around the edges and hang it around your house or wrap it nicely as a christmas gift.
I used also the wooden frame edges to write a personal message for my friend when i gifted one of this.

thankful update.

HELLO! i hope everyone had a great thanksgiving. I really did not get to see my family due to work and school which is why i am looking forward to Christmas SOOO MUCH. I thought i had sacrificed a lot of things before but now that i am starting my career it seems like the sacrifices get harder and bigger...the yellow brick road was not always fun for Dorothy either so i am so very thankful for the opportunities in life God has given to me and enjoying the ride.

Regardless of the distance etc i had a Mini-Thanksgiving dinner in my apartment, i had the perfect excuse to go to Target and shop at the dollar spot (which is amazeeee), i made all the sides, ate tons, then ended the night watching movies and drinking tea and talked to my mom on the phone all day. I am blessed with amazing family and friends. THANKFUL VERY THANKFUL.

When it comes to the creative side of my life i have had an intense focus on decorating and making handmade decoration for all over my place. I made some embroidered wall art which i will be having a tutorial here soon because its a great idea for inexpensive and thoughtful Christmas gifts!

Happy Monday Everyone! This weekend was filled with fun, crafty, vintagy (not sure that's a word but it should be) and friendly vibes! As you know we attended a Saturday Market @ The vintage Vault which was pretty cool , i met a lot of neat vendors who were also very very friendly. It was super windy that day and as we helped each other keep our forts up we had a blast just chatting and enjoying meeting new customers.
In a quick note i want to apologize for the pre-weekend sale at room the store was closed due to the owner having a family emergency however the online sale was still going on and i hope you enjoyed it :)
This week is going to be crazy creative because i am getting ready for all the holiday festivities as well as products for the site and for new events we plan to attend. for now i'm going to leave you with some pictures of top seller items we took to the event and random highlights of my weekend

Welcoming November is a sweet feeling because the tulle room will be having a vendor spot at the Vintage Vault here in Austin i have been working on my craft area in the new apartment because the old one was too bulky now with my new one being set up,l i will be sewing this week a lot of new little vintage treasures and accessories to take to the event!

When it comes to October it was the busiest month so far for me, also the most transitional and fun ! I was too exhausted from all the unpacking pending i had that i didn't really dress up as anything for the Halloween festivities however i still went out and enjoyed some music and company from friends . It has been hectic week for me and i have taken also the time to have some down time and wonder around the city i have found a lot of coffee house treasures, bubble tea, vegan ice cream etc.

The most exciting about this week has been one of me and my best friend favorite bands The Drums playing tonight! I bought the tickets a couple of weeks ago and today i finally get to dance weird around them.

There's a bitter sweet feeling to my recent move from our home base and forever loving Mcallen to Austin it is always scary and exciting to move to another city even though it was something that i had been meaning to do for a while it never seem to be the right time. Now me and Bradley have found ways to grow in our professional careers, better jobs and creative outlets without being apart from each other in beautiful Austin, TX.

It Has been fun so far. The moving part and the boxes not so much but the city and the people make it all so worth it. My birthday gift from Brad and my mom has finally been of GREEEEAT help because without my tablet i would not be able to GPS my way through life so if you are planning of moving..GET ONE

When it comes to the store there will be a lot more happening! I will not be attending the art walk in mcallen as usual but the bright side is that there is a gazillion of other handmade/craft events all around where we are THE TULLE ROOM get to share the creations!!

When it comes to Mcallen loyal customers you will always be able to shop ONLINE for their favorite accessories! We will continue to ship all over the USA From our new miniscule office.

Due to the very tight schedule i have i rarely have time to go out. This week i while i was out with my boyfriend getting some displays and fixtures for the upcoming art walk events we decided to have a mini date and go play mini golf, eat sushi and be silly.
Who says after all that work we can't play??

Today being my day off from reality i spent the entire day around my apartment making this little beauties out of scraps of vintage clothing i have left over from all the reconstructed skirts and dresses i've been working on.

I got super excited when i finally got them done, throwing such pretty prints of fabric will never ever happen again! They are only going to be 1 little dollar. You can support and recycle at the same time and they will be available at this upcoming art walk in September!

My boyfriend also took the liberty of making me some new business cards with my name on it and all that fancy stuff. I'm so very into turquoise this summer and he got the color right too! i like them what do you think?

Today was a perfect day of clear thoughts and it felt rather nice after all the stress from last week because of the craft fair. I am proud to say i feel accomplished as of now, this past week i received a lot of sweet comments from people i don't know personally but that appreciate my work at the tulle room. Today specially i feel thankful for having a passion, a drive, and having people that support it.

We have projects, projects, projects.. coming soon and definitely something i would like to update you all about.

Soon we will be having a small collection of handmade and reconstructed clothing at one of my favorite stores in town called ROOM CLOTHING. It is exciting because i was able to work closely with that store and i absolutely love the vibe, the energy the owner Monica provides. We will be announcing the launch date later this month!

There was no better way to end the night and week than by having tea,reading a book and laying in a unicorn. <3
That mug is still my favorite reminds me of a friend i had that faded like they sometimes do.

I want to begin by thanking every one that went to the summer craft festival and supported. The event was a great success due to the amazing vibe that all of the people brought this past Sunday.

It was truly a great surprise to see a lot of great new talent. This experience of actually dreaming this event and seeing the reality of it was pure bliss. I was lucky to work with a lot of great people and local stores, we teamed up to bring a cute fashion show showcasing a lot of the local talent in reconstructed vintage, local designers and t-shirt designs.(more pictures soon)
It was so inspiring to see everyone excited to shop.

We are so excited for this upcoming Sunday July 31st. We will be hosting along with Ouch My Ego one of our most beloved projects EVER!

It has been a long time that the idea of dedicating a whole day to art and creative minds had been in my head and it was just a great opportunity to share this project with my good friend George from OME and then finally make it a reality.

Personally as a crafter i believe that a lot of opportunities find you and when they don't in this case living in south Texas you need to make them possible for you and your fellow creative minds.

a collector in disguise.

I am now taking a break from actual work environment to my old room in north Mexico where all my dreams began and as i sit here looking at all the stuff that i managed to gather in this one room that talks about my childhood and teen life i can't help to submerge in my imagination.

I found my old collection of frogs, which i had forgotten about. I had a very particular fixation for frogs, all kinds, so everywhere i would travel to i would buy a frog! My collection began to grow and then out of no where i stopped collecting them and completely forgot about them. Having thought about that event in detailed i realized why i stopped collecting them...it was one of my mom's friends that one day our of her good heart gave me an assortment of about 10-20 frogs in all sizes and shapes funny faces and whatnot. After that day i stopped collecting. There were just too many that i had not handpicked myself, the emotion was gone.

Now that i am older and i am able to analyze that event which lead me to think..how SAD! i wish i collected something again. Then i thought wait, i am still a collector. I just now have transitioned to pretty things. all kinds. I collect beautiful vintage pieces, i collect clothes. There are clothes that i love so dearly i am happier having in a mannequin at home just to stare at. Half of the things i collect i share and that is why the tulle room exists! I share what i handpick and love from my favorite thrift shops across the US and Mexico.

I am lucky to have evolved this sense of collecting even if it went from frogs to princesses, after all that's how the story goes. I realized all this time i have been a collector in disguise.

The following video is just one of my favorite inspiration videos, childhood influences all of us that is why some of us never grow up. We just rearrange our ideas to make them work in the adult world

This couple of months have been so random and full of so many surprises and one of the loveliest surprises was to have rekindled my friendship with one of the first friends i can say i EVER made back when i was right about 5-6 yrs old...then of course life happens you grow up and inside your head everyone creates and follows a different path and our story was not an exception.
As you all know i am a huge fan of all things unique and all creative things coming from the heart so when i saw her crazy creativity and amazing accomplishments this little lady has been pocketing in the past couple of years i thought the world needs MORE of this!
So with such long introduction i leave you with Mariana Benavides the genius hands behind a project called "Neon Pop Art"

Her paintings are so full of energy and positivity that you can't help but to fall in love with every single one of them.
The one of a kind art that Mariana portrays in each painting is so unique and impossible to keep your eyes off of! so mariana had an "AHA!" moment and launched her first project of notebooks, planners and accessories which has quickly become a success every where she has taken her products. Due to the positive response of art freaks like me and not so freaks that went crazy about them she has decided to test waters in the fashion world by designing her very own tote bags.

And the coolest fact of this whole story is that All products are manufactured by Mexican designers and 100% Mexican labor!(sorry china)

First post of 2011 and i just noticed it has been a while since i have updated the blog my apologies but this past couple of months have been so changing and busy like you can't imagine!
A new year brings always hopes for a great future and with that said it also means i have been thinking a lot and situating my mind to focus on the projects i want to make happen this year with the main purpose of staying true to what you love us for which is handmade.
I'm all about reinvention and the website is no exception , i believe in order to move forward things have to reinvent themselves because if not what fun would that be??? So that is why i have planned a series of changes around here for you.
This year you can expect a lot more tutorials on DIY ideas ,local events, and of course more trips! 2011 is about movement and adventure for me so i have been already working on where in the map we are having our handmade adventure next! Isnt that exciting??

Last but not least i want to thank YOU my dear customer, for not missing an event where we go set up, for spreading the love with your friends, for the kind emails and feedback, without all of you that follow and have learned to love the tulle room my most sincere THANKS because none of the success we had last year would have been possible without your support.

Please excuse me all of you readers and friends for not being available lately, i have been hiding and trying to get ready to take thetulleroom.com to new adventures and working in new items for new customers and for this upcoming local art walk.
My halloween celebration spirit is running low because i celebrated last week, however the candy corn addiction still persists.

The adventure came to and end. We are definitely doing this again and i also want to add that without the support of all of you that have believed in us,the tulle room would not be able to get anywhere. So like that Journey songs says ... Don't stop believing!

The inspiration is priceless, all the nice people i met, the people i only knew via phone or email turned out to be even sweeter in person. I am being dead honest i was not expecting that much love and collaboration specially being so far away from home.

Thank you,thank you for allowing me to take my creativity places and opening doors and possibilities to a deep in nowhere Texas Crafter. (i'm glad you all now know where Mcallen is, and no its not near Austin, and yes its way south.)

New york taught me a couple of things. First, there is A LOT of people so yeah you can sure make it there but you have to wake up before thousands of people and fight for a seat in the train (which i can honestly live without,im borderline GERMophobe, i cannot stand the smells, coughs and sneezes of strangers in huge amounts)
Also Education is key and if you want to do what you love you have to be prepared people are street smart as well as book smart, so you ain't fooling anyone in the city.

I feel accomplished of taking us in this trip and learning so much from others and ourselves. I sure want to learn more from this great place now that our horizons have expanded which is why i am not saying goodbye but see you later alligator.

Part two : i made friends.

The second day of the fair i was mainly tied to my booth i coudn't enjoy much of the fair but when i did there was usually a nice friendly, crafter, artist or monster to greet me. You really wished you lived in wonderland.

After the fair was over i was exhausted so i decided to sleep in the next day...i dont know how good of an idea that was but after my 10 hrs of sleep i became a tourist! and i will show you more of my adventures as a tourist in the next post.

The day finally arrived! I had no idea what to expect or how to feel about the entire weekend ahead of me, i felt scared and kind of clueless because everything was so new to me as well as the people. All fears and doubts disappeared the first day of setting up and makers party. As i walked in i heard bands play, saw people in different costumes, the check in desk was super kind finding our fixtures and our maker colleagues were such a pleasure to meet!
They served us Gerard's paella for dinner (food network's paella challenge winner) which was AMAZING!! I had the chicken and shrimp paella and the texture of such dish can't be described, it was so good i wouldn't attempt to make it myself.

The next day the first day of the festival begun, with my heart in my hands i received my first customer 5 minutes after opening the booth and luckily that's how the day continued one after another different people from all over came to greet us, try on out items, tell us jokes or simply to give us a compliment. Which is PRICELESS! our top seller item was the vintage doll eyes!

Every time i got a chance i ran to see different activities going on and as i approached the other side of the fair i was blown away by all the creativity all around me, popular mechanics was there allowing people to do hands-on activities to understand certain mechanisms.

Everyone was representing their own style and what they were representing with their crazy outfits. Some were head to toe covered in gold riding cardboard gold ponies can you imagine that? My favorite bike was this one which took me back to some 1800's circus of some sort and i loveeeed it i followed him around like a creep.

Every little sting and item made a noise like this beetle would have his own percussion set ha!

Hands down my favorite activity was Nelson with his electric chaircuts! He had an amplifier on his back and some sort of belt full of different tools and mechanisms that would make sick noises depending on the tool he was using to cut the hair. The customer was taped to the chair and also taped from eyes and mouth the whole thing was very asylum themed. Crazy awesome!!!

It was so amazing to have been able to be part of such a celebration of creativity as the world maker faire is. I could not believe my eyes in a lot of the things i saw and lived that weekend. i am Definitely honored to have been able to meet such great creative people from all over and specially being a part of the first time the world maker faire was in NYC. It was a whole other world were impossible things were possible and people from other planets existed. inspired yet?

So we made it to NYC. I had not flown in over 10 yrs so i did get annoyed at some point but so far it has been worth every single minute of stress, sleepless nights and ranting i've had to make this trip happen!
I have met so many new faces and most of them awesome people. On our first day in the city we celebrated my dear friend's birthday at her apartment in Manhattan after about 9 bottles of wine (don't ask me how)we landed in the other side of town having drinks from a tea cup, to be honest the back room has the right vintage feel that takes you on this imaginary trip to the past.

So far so good...here's some pictures.

i took a walk around and found a display of andy warhol and i was wearing a t shirt bradley made me of his face. GRAND.

we attempted to work on our modeling and failed...

After all that wine and tea cup drinks i had a BLAST it was so much fun. Fun fact : bradley fooled some locals by telling them they needed a special knock to enter the bar..and they did it but the bar was closed...so they thought they had done the knock incorrectly! ha! never listen to the drunk townies in the city.
The first day was just the beginning of our preparation for maker faire makers party and of course Maker faire itself! i will continue to make time to blog this trip but i can't promise because pictures are not even enough to describe the experience.

This month has been CRAZY busy for us, and that is because we got accepted to showcase and sell at the magnificent World Maker Faire NYC 2010 !! To be honest it was unexpected because i had applied before and not made the cut. This time when everything seemed to not have real direction i got the news. That means the work load increased by 200% and we had to get busy, real busy, making items and brain storming on ideas to cater to everyone attending this SO very FUN event!

it has been in my head. The hair, the sequin, the ruffles, the over-sized items. Lucky for me im a sucker for bangs and jet black hair...so really what else can i say...lanvin inspired me today because the NEW ITEMS for the store are already in and i kept him in my mind all day as i sew buttons, sequin and restored ruffles in place. I was being superficial today and totally loving it.

i had been discussing with my best friend how hard it is to transcend in time as a creative person. Most of the people that will forever be alive for their creative work really didn't plan it.
For example one of my favorite artists is Andy Warhol, not because pop art is "cool" but because he was not afraid to give his touch to something that already existed, cluelessly found his way of expressing his vision, that will transcend in time forever.

The world is so competitive nowadays that all you can really do is be yourself, everyone is doing something or trying to make something happen but what will transcend will be beyond the millions of bucks people want to make, or past the greediness that murders creativity...it will transcend in time if and when you let yourself go and express your true art.

Since i can remember i have been told i have a photographic memory but what does that even mean?? I have always felt inspiration and i have comprehended things by images , videos, songs or paintings..im guessing that is what that means, point being you can not get through me unless it involves any of the above.
Therefore i have noticed i communicate the same way. As i'm trying to talk to a friend about how i feel, or sitting down stitching something up i cannot fully express it unless i think of the image, sound or experience that lead me to creating or sharing a story. I guess i just love the poetic side of things...the side everyone overlooks or no one cares to analyze. So tonight i leave you with one of the most inspiring clips from my favorite movie that you can interpret as you like.

There has definitely been a lot going on in this past month so i have not had time to exercise my public writing skills,but today i decided to take a little trip to the coffee shop near my new neighborhood to get out and it feels nice to clear out your thoughts when you have been a house cat for the past 3 weeks!!
The tulle room has been undergoing through a serious move, from location, craft area, stock closet etc. It is all so much better! I can't wait to show you all !
We are preparing for the end of summer sale events and new merchandise, a lot of new clothes and accessories in the making. This is all for our loyal customers those who are always asking for more!
So much inspiration can come when you change your surroundings and keep an open mind so what i've been basically doing is taking my time decorating the new apartment and it's quite therapeutic..and so far this last set of Buddhas is what has brought it together.

Music and fashion go hand in hand and this band went from being a typical indie band with cardigans and tight jeans to ultra costume 'look at me' kind of style and trust me I'm looking! The most eye catching thing they did was perhaps color blocking and neon colors and Now they not only have a unique music style but their new look is amazing! i think musicians are really adopting the weird clan look ...which in my opinion is the best way to describe the "i'm unusual and i'm awesome" attitude we all need at some point in our creative careers right? i liked the Klaxons before but in 2010 i think i love them.

So i'm at work and i took some time to write this after checking on my phone and reading one of my wwd updates.
To be honest i am VERY excited to see the clothes i mean it has been created by the original Material girl. I can't wait for the lace, the studs, the leather, the boots and the bright pink lips. Check out the Ad campaign here!

i have been drowning in memories, enjoying pictures and reflecting on how i have become who i am.

As i was going through memories and talking with my mom we brought up old tv series and since i have decided to allow myself time to enjoy things like this i started to watch an old Novela called " Bodas de Odio" or "Hate weddings", the story reminds me of the great Gatsby and the costumes just blew my mind.

Forget modern tv...this is what i call GOOD story lines.

This past week has been so hectic! There has been lots and lots to do hence the lack of posts. I am preparing for a journey what i like to call the gypsy road, and here is why...

Textbook definition of gypsy : a person who leads and unconventional life, a person who moves from place to place as required by employment.

I think the definition describes exactly who we all are at some point, and the beauty of it is that at some point in life we are all gypsies for one reason or another (minus the sweet trailer).

In my search to find out more about their lives i have gotten hit by inspiration.
Life is good for a gypsy , work, travel and dance!

Rock n' RollerDerby

This past week we were lucky to be invited to the roller derby game in Weslaco,tx It was so much fun! It was the first time i ever went, the girls are so energetic they create an awesome vibe in the entire place! My favorite girl was "glitter pop" she was in deed covered in glitter with a hello kitty helmet but since looks can be deceiving she was the fastest and more driven girl i saw out there on the game,therefore i took a lot of pictures of her.

One of our friends was invited to be the score keeper and she dressed up as a pin up girl. She totally rocked it by wearing our Florrette headpiece that was custom made to the size she wanted it. We sat in the area called "suicidal seating" which where the girls fall and get hurt through out the game. It was intense and FUN! If you have never gone to see this girls play i encourage you to go, local talent is everywhere and we need to show support!Here's a few pictures..enjoy.

This past may 20th we were so lucky to share with our closest friends and customers at last the release of our website. We were so thrilled to show everyone our new items and the new creations!
Most of the headpieces were for display only,however at the end we gave the chance to a select few to purchase the items.
Our first event ever could not have been sweeter. We look forward to see what the future has in store for us ! For now we leave you with a few of our favorite pictures.
